Photograph of the Phillips Block, corner of Spring and Franklin Streets (later the site of Hamburger's Department Store and the May Company), Los Angeles, ca.1890. Phillips Block. The four-story ornate brick building has a small square domed tower on each corner and a taller more ornate tower halfway between on both street-facing facades. Awnings provide shade over the sidewalk for the businesses on the ground floor. Utility lines cross the street at right. Part of the cornice of the building from which the photograph was taken is visible at upper right. Legible signs include: "B.F. Gardner, books, news, stationery", ..."printing"..., "Hotel del Goronado [?], [...]enoy"..., "The leaders of fashion, Chicago Clothing Company", "R.G. Cunningham, dentist", "1887, Phillip's Block", "Murph[...], lawyer".
