Description
Photograph of Spring Street looking north from just south of Seventh Street, 1913. Very prominent within the middle of the street is a street car carrying a load of passengers. A network of utility lines run overhead. Men, carrying parcels or briefcases, stroll along the sidewalk or cross the street. At left, a small construction crew works around a winch erected over a hole dug through the sidewalk. Several horse-drawn carriages and a few early automobiles drive along the street or are parked along the curb. The buildings range in size from two- to more than ten-stories. Many of the buildings carry advertisements and display a business name prominently.
Legible signs on the street car include: "University.", "Dalton Ave.", "Exposition Park". Legible signs on buildings include: "I.N. Van Nuys Building, Reservations now being made. Quarters cut up to suit tenants.", "All signs in this building, by Dromgold & Schroeder Co., 113 West Sixth St.", "... & Co., ...estate, Occupy these quarters, ...Mar. 1st 1913.", "[Home] of the [F]irst [Natio]al Bank", "California (Vegetable?) Union", "...rd Bldg.", "Los Angeles, Realty Board, 6th Floor", "[D]irectory", "California Real Estate and Building Co., Formerly known as The Lawrence (D.?) Burck Co.", "Union Realty Co. Inc., ... the Builders, W.W. Mines & Co. Real Estate", "Sales, Leases, Loans, Insurance, W. Ross Campbell", "The James R.H. Wagner, 2nd Floor.", "...tel ...ward, ... Fire Proof.", "Brinks Cafe", "Southern Pacific", "Open Evenings", "Painless Dentistry, Crown and Bridge Work, A Specialty, Dr. S.T. Ehred", "Canadian Pacific, Europe, Asia, Alaska, Australia", "Roma Cafe, Italian and French".
