A Salvadoran army soldier, part of the Ramón Belloso Battalion, stands in front of a small fire cooking a meal while on guard duty at an outpost near the town of Perquín, the heart of guerrilla territory. He is holding an M16 assault rifle of U.S. origin. Standing behind him at the outpost is another soldier holding an M16 assault rifle. He is wearing a hat. The guerrillas occupied the town of Perquín on October 1982 but in the first couple of weeks of February 1983, Colonel Miguel Antonio Mendez and the Belloso Battalion recaptured it. The guerrillas assaulted the Belloso Batallion command post in Perquín on February 23 forcing Mendez and the battalion to retreat from Perquín. The Ramón Belloso Battalion formed in 1982 with the assistance of the United States. It was one of the most aggressive military units during the Civil War, with its men trained at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina, and was nicknamed the "Gringo Battalion."
