Description
This circa-1960 photograph shows a series of businesses on the south side of K Street between Fifth and Sixth streets. They are the shuttered New Royal Theater at 526 K St., the Central Hotel at 522 1/2 K St., Mal’s Discount House at 522 and 524 K St., and the A-1 Loan and Jewelry Company at 520 K St. The New Royal, which had long been a draw for adult films, closed in 1961. To the far right of the frame, and painted upon the eastern flank of the Hotel Coloma at 508 K St. is an advertisement for Blue Seal Bread, featuring cartoon character Woody Woodpecker.
