Description
Crowd of onlookers in stadium bleachers overlooking the start of a bicycle race. Print reproduced from page 171 of promotional book "Santa Clara County and its Resources: A Souvenir of The San Jose Mercury," in section titled "Cycling Interests," and captioned "The Garden City Cement Bicycle Track: Waiting for the Pistol Shot." Label on reverse reads "Hanchett Park." "San Jose has a cement bicycle track, upon which a number of world's records have been made. It is an ellipse, and very curiously constructed...It is just one-third of a mile in circumference. It was built for a two minute track. That is to say, it was so constructed that the wheels will stand at right angles with the track when traveling at a speed of a mile in two minutes. The combined cost of track and trand stands is given as $9000."
