A highlight of the Uplifters outing on September 25, 1937, was the spirited horseshoe pitching contest under the chairmanship of Dr. Frank F. Barham. The photo shows a ticklish bit of measuring. Left to right, Cecil Frankel, Dr. Barham, William West and August Calleaud. The winner was a "dark horse," Rowland Crawford of Malibu Beach. Last to enter, he "allowed as how he could pitch a little," then gave an astonishing display of ringers that swept all before him.
