Description
Three women charged with numerous offenses during the recent garment workers' strike appeared for jury trials before Municipal Judge Newcomb Condee. The defendants were, left to right: Mrs. Ethel Goldstein, Mrs. Charlotte Duncan, and Miss Frances Sanchez, all of whom were arrested in front of 714 South Los Angeles Street. The three women were to be tried separately. Mrs. Goldstein's case was called first. Accourding to arresting officers, Mrs. Goldstein yelled "scab," "tramp" and "bums" at all persons who attempted to cross the picket lines which surrounded the building. She grabbed and struck one woman, it was charged, while the other two defendants allegedly attacked an elderly women in the alley in the rear of the establishment. When Police Officer Paul Phelps rushed to the assistance of the elderly woman, it was necessary he said, for him to draw his blackjack and "retreat" until he was rescued by a fellow officer.
