Description
Playing croquet by the seaside, a woman and six girls model their fashions for El Salon de la Moda. The first girl on the left wears an outfit of tan and brown. Her drop-waisted dress gives the appearance of three layers: a short pleated skirt, a dress of loose folds that fall over the skirt, and an outer layer that mimics a coat. All three pieces are gathered together at the hip with a wide dark brown sash that terminates at the side with a bow. The coat element has pleats in the back to accommodate a bustle. There are rows of buttons down both sides of the front opening of the coat at the chest and at the hem. The collar, placard, and cuffs are accented with embroidered bands. The girl's long dark hair is pulled back with a brown bow. Her light brown straw hat is accented with dark brown ribbon and tan feathers. To complete the outfit she wears tan gloves, brown stockings, and black and tan button boots with heels. Standing next to her is a younger girl in a classically-themed light blue dress. Bands of gray and red Greek key and stripes edge the hem and standing collar. Red buttoned bands at the top of the shoulder gather in the fullness at the front of the dress. The front opens into a deep v to the dropped waist in a cross over style. The high necked blouse section fills the top behind the v. The skirt falls into stiff pleats below a belt of twisted cord with a medallion at the hips. The girl's blond hair is left loose and she wears a conical blue hat with ruby red lining, with a wide red ribbon, a large bow, and standing feathers. She wears tan gloves, red hosiery, and black heeled shoes with straps and silver buckles. In the center is a woman wearing a long dress of deep rose satin and white eyelet. The dress has a rose satin blouse in narrow vertical pleats with a high standing collar and an anchor-shaped brooch pinned at the center front. The white eyelet bodice opens down the front to reveal the rose blouse, and is trimmed with yellow buttons. The skirt of the dress is made entirely of white eyelet and the waist is tightly cinched with a wide rose sash with a very large bow at the back. A rose satin underskirt peeks beneath the hem of her long white eyelet skirt. To complete the outfit she wears yellow gloves and a pointed straw bonnet trimmed inside and out with folds of rose ribbon. She wears red stockings, yellow heeled shoes and a wide bangle bracelet. She carries a white parasol lined in red, with a handle terminating in an anchor. The next girl wears an outfit of rust and brown. The bodice of her dress is form-fitting and has long sleeves. A dark orange satin bow at the left shoulder secures a sash of ribbon that sweeps diagonally across her back ending at the right hip. The drop-waist of the dress is trimmed with a satin bow that emphasizes the pouf at the back. Her knee-length rust skirt has panels of white fabric with classical acanthus leaf scrolling. She wears a dark brown straw bonnet with a tall crown trimmed with white ribbon and greenery. She holds a net with a handle, mostly concealed from the viewer. She wears brown stockings and black button boots with heels. Her dark hair is worn loose. The girl third from the right wears a navy blue and red outfit. The navy blue bodice is form fitting and has a red collar and cuffs, with a red anchor motif on the chest. The dropped-waist of the dress is emphasized with a blue and red striped sash with a large bow at the back. The horizontal stripes of the sash complement the vertical red and blue stripes of her short pleated skirt. To complete the outfit she wears blue stockings, yellow heeled shoes with red bows, and a blue straw bonnet trimmed with red flowers; her blond hair is worn loose. The girl second in from the right wears a white outfit with lace and green ribbons. The white bodice is styled to look as if it has lapels that open to reveal a tightly-pleated shirt-front. The edges of the lapels are trimmed with white scalloped lace and wide green ribbon. The dropped waist, cuffs, and collar are trimmed with green ribbon and a large green bow sits on her right shoulder. The bodice of the dress falls into loosely-gathered folds over a double tier of white scalloped lace ruffles. The edge of a green underskirt peeks from beneath the lace. To complete the outfit she wears short green stockings, yellow heeled shoes with green bows, yellow gloves, and a hat which is formed into a point. A green bow fills the interior point of the hat and the exterior is trimmed with pink flowers and greenery; her black hair is worn loose. The girl on the far right wears a white outfit accented with red. The bodice is styled to look like a vest and coat. The vest is white with red buttons and the white coat has a pattern of red fleur-de-lis. The lapels of the coat are white folds that continue and sweep to the sides below the dropped waist with a wide dark red sash and a bow. The skirt beneath is of lace with a scalloped hem.The cuffs and collar are white scalloped lace. To complete the outfit she wears red stockings, black shoes, yellow gloves, and a straw hat trimmed with white ribbon and greenery. While the girls play croquet, a lively tourist scene unfolds behind them. Crowds of people stand underneath a striped scalloped canopy at a seawall while they enjoy the coastline and view ships in the bay.
