Description
(PJ 07.1998). - Cf. QS-30.041.0117 und QS-30.041.0119 (MS 01.1999).
Note translation: I understand the caption to mean "Sisters who are not deaconnesses" - i.e. professional single women in this church organisation who are not members of an order of deaconesses. "Haube" (= veil) is normally used to refer to a woman getting married. In this special context, however, I have heard the expression used several times to refer to being, or not being, a member of an order of deaconnesses. And I know that powerful forces in the Basel Mission at the time this photograph was taken were pushing to create an order of deaconesses which would embrace the single, professionally active women in the Basel Mission. (PJ 7/98). - Cf. QS-30.041.0117 and QS-30.041.0119. (MS 01.1999).
