In the 1920s, Elta Cartwright was star of the new Women's Track team at Eureka High School, and then went on to track stardom at Humboldt State. Her athletic career culminated with winning a position on the 1928 U.S. team for the Olympic Games in Amsterdam. She was the first woman named to the U.S. Olympic Team. Elta went on to teach in local school and was inducted into the HSU Athletic Hall of Fame and served as Home Coming Queen.
