Loyalist mural, Ebrington St Lower, Londonderry, 2006. Mural commemorating achievements of Ulster-Scots in America; 'From Pioneers to Presidents'; 'President George Washington, 1st US President 1789- 1797'; 'If defeated everywhere else, I will make my final stand for liberty with the Scotch-Irish (Ulster-Scots) of my native Virginia'; 'History records that almost half of Washington's army were Ulster-Scots'; plaque left: 'From pioneers to Presidents AttitudeArtwork - 1990s This mural celebrates the achievemets of the Ulster-Scots in America. Many Scots Presbyterians settled in the north of Ireland in the 17thcentury. Over 250,000 later emigrated to escape religious persecution and economic hardship. They helped to win the American War of Independence and to open up the West. James Buchana (1791-1868) was the 15th president of the United States. A total of 17 US Presidents claimed Ulster blood i their veins'.
