Photograph caption dated February 20, 1956 reads, "One of long-looked-for major improvements for community of Sylmar was officially accepted and approved when a ribbon cutting sparked completion of widening and re-paving of Astoria street at Southern Pacific Railroad tracks. Project, which was started in early February by the Griffith Company, contractor, at a cost of $3,400, was opened to vehicular traffic. From left in group participating in ceremonies are Dale Ahern, president of Sylmar Civic Association; Mrs. Mercedes Koehler; San Fernando Mayor Dan G. Spencer; O. E. Jorgenson; Everett Burkhalter, Los Angeles City councilman; Mrs. Marietta Baker, long-time Sylmar resident snipping ribbon; R. S. Craig, district engineer; Lester Thompson, builder for Griffith Co.; Bert Mann, chief engineer, Los Angeles, And M. O. Nelson, past president Sylmar Civic Association and civic leader. At rear are Ray Woods, San Fernando city manager; L. G. Ward, L. L. Larson, Matt Carroll, Fred Sloop and Valley Police Officer Howard Carrick."
