Description
Mercury Herald building at 30 West Santa Clara Street, San Jose. The paper operated here between 1928 and 1942, when it moved to a larger facility at 211 West Santa Clara Street. This image was featured on a San Jose Historical Museum collecting card c. 1992 with the following caption: The Mercury Herald was separately owned and operated as a daily morning newspaper from 1903 until 1942. In the fall of 1942 the Mercury Herald merged with the News. The News, publishing only in the afternoon, continued with a separate staff from the Mercury Herald. The Mercury Herald building, located at 30 West Santa Clara Street, was acquired by the First National Bank in 1941. In 1963, the building was incorporated into the First National Bank addition. Today, owning just one of the automobiles seen in the photo parked in front of the building would yield a financial base of $300,000, though the parking fines would probably exceed that.
