From the Luther A. Ingersoll Historical Collection. The Sierra Madre Public Library is the fourth oldest city library in Los Angeles County and the tenth oldest in Southern California. At the time it was founded in 1887, there were only about fifty families in Sierra Madre. To fund the building's construction, approximately forty of those families raised $3,041.00 through library membership subscriptions. $2,000.00 of that amount and the land on which to erect a structure was donated by Mrs. R.E. Ross in memory of her husband. The building was completed in the summer of 1887 and a book social was held in October that same year to celebrate the library's official opening. The building stood until 1954, at which time it was razed and replaced by the current structure. Exterior of the Sierra Madre Public Library, Sierra Madre, California.
