$Students listen--and look, too--when Sarona Sotoa talks. The 24-year-old Sotoa is the daughter of a high chief in American Samoa. She has joined the associate professor's staff in the school of social science as a regular instructor. In her colorful native garb, the royal example of Polynesian charm leads discussions and studies about the culture of her native islands some 4800 miles across the Pacific from the UCI campus. "Recruiting Sarona for the staff was not a promotional gimmick but a serious attempt to bring realism in what some schools might consider an off-beat course. Sarona is highly qualified for her post," Dr. Metzger said on December 3, 1967.
