Comments on her study of oriental art and Chinese and Japanese; her trip to Japan, Indochina and China (1939-40), and internment by the Japanese during World War II in a camp in the Shantung province; her career as founding head of the East Asiatic Library (University of California, Berkeley) and as scholar and teacher in the field of Chinese literature. Copies of photographs and of documentary materials inserted and appended.
