Comments on her study of oriental art and Chinese and Japanese; her trip to Japan, Indochina and China (1939-40), and internment by the Japanese during World War II in a camp in the Shantung province; her career as founding head of the East Asiatic Library (University of California, Berkeley) and as scholar and teacher in the field of Chinese literature.
