Description
Photograph of an etching of "Timms & Co., commission & forwarding business, San Pedro, 27 miles from Los Angeles" (caption), 1870. Image shows wagon drawn by 8-horse team, a cart, a wagon, a rope hoist on a landing bearing goods, and, in the bay, a rowboat, a sailing ship, and a steamer. Deadman's Island is in the background. Augustus Timms acquired the site used for "Timms Landing" aka "Timms Point" around 1850, located in what would later be Fishermen's Slip close by Ports O' Call, San Pedro (berths 74 to 77 in 1945). He built houses and new landing (it is said that the site had been occupied by Sepulveda's Landing) and developed a very successful shipping center. In 1881 Mrs. Wheeler opened a school in this warehouse with 15 pupils from 14 families.
