Description
Rupert Holmes discusses his book, "Swing: A Mystery." The story takes place in San Francisco circa 1940. All of the locations mentioned in the book were (and are) real locations. The main character is a band leader named Ray. He is involved with Gail Prentice, who has won a commission to have her original composition titled "Swing," premiere at the Golden Gate Exposition of 1940. Gail invites Ray home to meet her parents and while serving dinner, Gail's mother purposely jabs him in the arm with a carving fork. Ray wonders why she would do this, and the pursuit of this question opens up a whole new set of problems for him. Holmes discusses the Broadway musical "The Mystery of Edwin Drood," and the play "Say Good Night, Gracie" which he wrote. He also discusses the 1979 song "Escape" ( The Piña Colada Song), and the death of his 10-year-old daughter.
