Pope John Paul II speaks as he holds his left hand up at Plaza 19 de Julio during his visit to Nicaragua in March 1983. The pope is in an ivory-colored religious habit and hat. Behind him there is a large mural with the faces of César Augusto Sandino and Carlos Fonseca. While Fonseca was killed in battle in 1979, Sandino was assassinated in 1934 by members of Nicaragua's National Guard shortly after leaving the presidential palace. Shortly after his assassination, Anastasio Somoza García deposed democratically elected president Juan Bautista Sacasa and installed himself in power.
