Description
V1p437c In PHOTO ALBUM-VAULT: ** fc917.9461 A3, Vol. I, page 437 bottom right. This photograph is contained in one of two volumes by Dobbin titled "Album of San Francisco." Text written under photo: "Market Street San Francisco 1864. Civil War days. Steam Dummy on street." View looks west from a second floor window at about the site of the later Palace Hotel. The street and sidewalks are paved with planks. A single track runs down the middle of Market, on which the approaching dummy can be seen west of Kearny. A man is driving a carriage eastward in the foreground. Other horse-drawn conveyances are further up the street or parked at the curb. The sidewalks are fairly crowded; top hats are everywhere. A large American flag is flying from a pole in front of the druggist at Market and Kearny. A number of fairly substantial buildings have been constructed on Market. Nothing but large sand hills are visible past Powell.
