Description
Peter F. Drucker’s 90th birthday celebration at the Getty Center in Los Angeles, CA. Steadman Upham, Claremont Graduate University President, begins the session making preliminary comments for the event, and introducing the Getty Trust’s Stephen Rountree, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, and details his contribution to making the event happen. Rountree begins discussing his tenure at CGU, and how CGU’s emphasis on both humanities and business is unique in the country. Upham then continues his introductory remarks, which include acknowledging those sponsoring the event, as well as the faculty and attendant staff, before highlighting the presence of Doris Drucker and the rest of the Drucker family. He then discusses the career and accomplishments of Drucker and highlights Drucker’s beliefs regarding education, the dissemination of knowledge, and the field of management within the liberal arts. Upham goes on to introduce Frances Hesselbein, who provides additional comments on Drucker’s life and legacy. Upham then introduces John C. (Jack) Shaw, who provides commentary regarding what Drucker has passed on to his students. Upham then introduces and shows a film on Drucker exploring his take on the practice and principle of management, featuring several contributors in addition to Drucker himself. Topics in the film include innovation through “organized abandonment,” the growth of the non-profit sector, and the development of policies and practices that take into account the increasing diversity of American society. Upham then introduces John W. Bachmann, who highlights Drucker’s thought and his contributions to the field of management, including the idea of knowledge workers in an organization. Drucker then speaks at the gathering, informing the crowd that he is overwhelmed by the event and that his time at CGU has been the happiest of his life. Upham then provides closing comments to the crowd.
