Description
In response to the spread of organized anti-Semitism in the United States during the 1930s, leaders of Los Angeles' Jewish community formed a special defense organization known as the Los Angeles Jewish Community Committee. The committee later changed its name to the Jewish Federation Council of Greater Los Angeles, Community Relations Committee. The collection documents the committee's efforts to combat prejudice and educate the public through cooperation with both Jewish and non-Jewish groups, from its formation in 1933 through the early 1990s. A promotional piece for Frank Sinatra from 1946, "Citizen Sinatra" takes the unusual approach of touting Mr. Sinatra's politics and interest in civil rights. "Crooning into a microphone is one thing, but to lay your career on the line, as Frank Sinatra has, in a one-man war on intolerance calls for a fighting heart. He has it!" The cover features a young Mr. Sinatra standing in front of a microphone stand (likely from radio station WIND in Chicago); an audience looks on. 10 x 8 in.
