The U.S.S. Monterey was a monitor class of warship laid down in 1889 by Union Iron Works in San Francisco. It was assigned to the Pacific Squadron and made numerous voyages to west coast ports. The Monterey participated in the Spanish-American war in the Philippines and later served as the station ship for Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. It was sold for scrap in 1921. View the U.S.S. Monterey at the port of Redondo Beach on May 5, 1894. A note on the verso of the photograph reads, "Lieutenant Sherman".
