Description
Joe Quigg, credited by many as the most influential midcentury board-maker, shaped this board for legendary big-wave rider Buzzy Trent to surf the Makaha break off Oahu. Quigg was among a handful of shapers based in Malibu, California, including Bob Simmons and Matt Kivlin, that pioneered balsa surfboard construction. Prior to the introduction of fiberglass in the 1940s, surfboards made entirely of balsa would have been too fragile. The lighter, more buoyant balsa board made the art of surfing more accessible to the general public.
