Portrait of John Steven McGroarty (1862-1944), author, Poet Laureate of California, Los Angeles Times columnist, two term Democratic Congressman, and the first mayor of Tujunga. Born in Buck Mountain, Pennsylvania, McGroarty moved to Los Angeles in 1901. Here, he authored numerous books and plays, including his most famous 3-hour 1911 "Mission Play," which presents the history of the California Missions from their inception in 1769 to their end in 1847. McGroarty passed away at age 81 at St. Vincent's Hospital on August 7, 1944 and was buried at Calvary Cemetery.
