Description
Photograph was edited for publication purposes.
The Clarence W. Pierce School of Agriculture is a two-year community college in Woodland Hills, California. It opened in September 1947, with 70 students and 18 faculty members and is part of the Los Angeles Community College District. The school's initial focus was crop cultivation and animal husbandry, and still retains a large swatch of open fields for hands-on working farm training. In 1956 the school was renamed Los Angeles Pierce College.; San Fernando Valley State College is now California State University, Northridge.
Photograph caption dated February 16, 1962 reads "Valley College students, displaying a copy of the 'Perce (sic) College Rankup' offer a good-natured razz to Pierce College, their Valley rivals in Woodland Hills. Some 1,400 copies of the phony, tongue-in-cheek newspaper were distributed at Pierce Thursday. The joke was a counter-blow to the suggestion by Pierce students that Valley should change its name to Pierce College East. Pierce Dean Vierling Kersey Jr. said, 'Everyone had a good laugh. It was very clever.'" Written on the blackboard are the words "East Valley. Ha! Ha!" The students are facing the blackboard, giving a thumbs-down gesture, with their backs to the camera.
