Description
There may not be the wealth and social background attached to the Kentucky Derby present when cowboys get together for a pony express race in the Baker Ranch rodeo Sunday in the Pasadena Rose Bowl, but the event will be steeped in traditions of the old west. Three champion buckaroos are shown here warming up their nags for the event, including, from left to right: Mike Shelton, Speck Craig and Fred Hunt. The buckaroos ride around the track, switch mounts and are off for another lap in imitation of the quick changes of the pony express riders of the early days of California's history. Photograph dated May 10, 1934.
