This photograph is contained in one of two volumes by Dobbin titled "Album of San Francisco."
Caption printed on photo: "#578. Market & Kearny Sts. 1865." Text written underneath: "Looking north on Kearney [sic] Street from 3rd & Market Street 1865. No Lotta ['s] Fountain at that time." View looks north on Kearny from 3rd just below Market. Maskell's Tea Store, Wm. Monahan Real Estate Sales Room, and Larrabbee's Book and Stationary Store are on the north side of Market west of Kearny. A bit of the Nucleus Hotel can be seen at the extreme right, with a carriage parked alongside it. The rails of the North Beach and Mission Railroad can be seen turning from Kearny into Geary. The rails of the Omnibus Railroad are visible going from Market into 3rd, with those of the Market Street Railroad cutting across from left to right.
Text written to right of photo: "Building on right in early days was where De Young Building now stands. This corner was known all over San Francisco as "Phil McGovern's Corner."
