Photograph was edited for publication purposes. The Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena, located at 3939 S. Figueroa Street, was officially opened on July 4, 1959 by then Vice President Richard M. Nixon and was designed by Welton Becket; general contractor was L.E. Dixon Company. The last event at the arena was a Bruce Springsteen concert. The arena was closed on March 19, 2016 and demolished to make room for a new soccer stadium. Photograph caption dated February 27, 1965 reads "Lakers' Elgin Baylor (22) disregards gangling arm of Zelmo Beatty [sic] (partially hidden) to score goal last night against St. Louis Hawks. Los Angeles' Rudy LaRusso (35) and Gene Wiley (12) await possible rebound. Lakers padded Western Division lead to five games over Hawks with 106-90 win." The game was held at the Sports Arena.
