Description
Photograph of a motorist getting directions in the Mojave desert, 1928. An early-model automobile is at center. It is a dark-colored convertible with a large arrow painted on the side. At right, a man in a cowboy hat is conversing with another man over a map. They are standing near a sign that indicates distances to selected towns. In the background, the flat desert stretches across the image. It is dotted with low bushes. A mountain range can be seen in the distance. The towns and distances on the sign include, from top to bottom, "Saratoga Springs 2 M", "Cave Springs 9 M", "Barstow 74 M", "Daggett 75 M", "Owl Spring 14 M", "Leach Spring 29 M", "Johannesburg 81 M", "Randsburg 83 M", "Silver Lake 30 M", and "Zabriskie 25 M".
