Photograph was edited for publication purposes The Calamigos Star C Ranch was founded by J. Grant and Helen Gerson in 1947. The 120-acre ranch was built to resemble a town in the Old West, holding overnight summer camp and later switching to day camp. The teen-age Beauty Farm was opened in 1961. The "farm" functioned as a health club, charm school, and summer camp all rolled into one. The ranch is now used for weddings, conferences, corporate picnics and movie and TV shoots, and is operated by the Gerson's grandsons, Garrett and Garner Gerson. Photograph caption dated June 27, 1964 reads "Pool exercises are held daily for teen-agers at the Beauty Farm to encourage ankle and leg development. Water polo and other games are also offered during leisure hours. The farm offers a complete self-improvement program for teenagers. Instructors Joyzelle Herod and Karen Wiere conduct walking classes daily. To be attractive a girl must know how to walk gracefully. During pool hours exercises are given in the water. Girls also work out on a trampoline for figure exercise." The teen-age Beauty Farm is located in the hills above Malibu.; See images #00119943 through #00119947 for all photos in this series.
