Description
Photograph of a drawing by Major Charles C. Churchill depicting an exterior view of the mission San Diego Alcala, ca.1858. A man and a woman stand in what appears to be a courtyard, speaking to a seated man who sits in front of a tent. Behind them, a brick wall lined by bushes and a palm tree can be visible. An opening in the wall leads to the mission itself, which can be seen in the background, a large, two-story adobe building with its bell tower connected to the left side, the peak of its roof topped by a cross. Porticos extend from both its left and right sides. The roofs are covered by terracotta tiles. Picture file card reads: "1904 Newport, RI. I certify that this photograph of my drawing of the old mission of San Diego, CA, made in 1858 is a correct copy.--Charles C. Churchill, Maj. U.S.A. Retired" as well as "Photo of which this is a copy is found in the San Diego Public Library. Photo here made by H.R. Fitch, 1243 Fifth St., San Diego.".
