Description
Photograph of a lithograph depicting Downey Block on the corner of Spring Street and Temple Street, Los Angeles, 1875-1885. Carriages and street cars both drawn by horses navigate the roads in front of the commercial block, a large, two-story romanesque building riddled with advertisements and signs. Pedestrians walk along the covered sidewalk, browsing the shops. The lithograph is from Thompson and West's History of Los Angeles County, published in 1880.
Legible signs include: "The Capitol", "La Cronica", "Gun Store", "I.N.L. Auction of [...]", "Music & Musical Instruments", "Libreria Espanola", "Books & Stationary", "L.W. Thatcher", "Commercial Restaurant", and "L. Harris Clothing.". Signs on the sides of streetcars read: "Cultural Park / Washington Garden", "S.P.R.R. Depot", and "Boyle Heights / Los Angeles & Aliss Avenue & Co.".
