A lunar landscape after the phosphate extraction, atoll of Makatea After the extraction of the phosphated sand, only féo (columns of hard limestone, of coral origin) remain. Comment : The atoll of Makatea was for a long time an economic driver for the French Polynesia region because of its large phosphate deposits. These were mined by the CFPO (Compagnie Française des Phosphates de l'Océanie) from 1917 until depletion of resources in 1966.
