"Mission Carpentry. Furniture made in the Blantyre Workshop." A selection of furniture, including tables, chairs and dressers, arranged in a room. The carpentry department was run by John McIlwain, who had arrived in Africa in 1880 in the service of the Livingstonia Central Africa Company. In 1884 he joined the mission at Blantyre and became head of carpentry, a post which he held until his death in 1927.
