Designed by architectural firm Pereira & Luckman with elements to maximize visual merchandising, this $3,000,000 shopping center opened in 1955. After just three decades of use, Whittier Downs Shopping Center was razed due to declining popularity.
Looking east over the Whittier Downs Shopping Center, located at Washington and Norwalk (center) boulevards in Santa Fe Springs. Some of the retailers include: J. C. Penney, Thrifty Drug Co., F.W. Woolworth Co., and a Food Giant supermarket. A King Cole Market, designed by A. Quincy Jones, is in the shopping center on the right. Homes located in the community of West Whittier fill the background. Photograph dated February 16, 1956.
