Description
Sign reading "No Cruising Zone - CVC 2100(K) SJMC 11.34." White with reflective iridescent vertical lines. Black print and outline. The back reads "This sign was ceremoniously removed on August 31, 2022, marking the end of a 36 year ban on cruising" and bears the signatures of assorted San Jose officials and community members. The sign was presented to History San Jose on December 12, 2022, by City Councilmember Raul Peralez, with the following remarks: "Earlier this year, on August 31, 2022, my office hosted a celebration to mark the end of San Jose's cruising ban. We brought together hundreds of community members, advocates, lowriders, and the United Lowrider Council of San Jose to celebrate the City Council's unanimous vote to repeal the ordinance. Today it is my pleasure to recognize and present the last "No Cruising" sign that was ceremoniously taken down that day to History San Jose where it will be archived with all our city's most important historical artifacts. It was amazing to see the City Hall plaza and Santa Clara Street filled with wonderfully designed and customized lowriders and hundreds of people to celebrate the occasion. The removal of this sign is in honor of our lowrider culture and history that exists within our City and can now fully thrive. And now, I along with my council colleagues and Mayor would like to present the last "No Cruising" sign to History San Jose to ensure that this moment will be preserved in our history forever."
