Born 4.IX (23.VIII) 1875 in Pavlovsk, died 13.IX.1946, in Moscow son of the sculptor Evgenii Alexandrovich Lancere, nephew of Alexandre Benois, brother of the architect Nikolai Lancere and Zinaida Serebriakova, and cousin of Nadia and Nicola Benois. 1892-95 attended the art school of the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts in St. Petersburg 1895 visited Paris where he studied under Filippo Colarossi and Benjamin-Constant 1898 returned to St. Petersburg where he joined the World of Art society established himself as a skilful graphic artist, and contributed subsequently to many publications such as the journal "Zolotoe runo" and the 1911 edition of Lev Tolstoi's "Khadzhi-Murat" 1905-06 worked for the satirical journals "Zritel'" and "Zhupel" 1907 designed productions for the Antique Theater in St. Petersburg 1913-26 made interior decorations for the Kazan Railroad Station in Moscow 1916 left Petrograd for Ust-Krestishche in Pskov Province 1918 Golike and Vilborg, Petrograd, published Tolstoi's "Khadzhi-Murat" with Lancere's illustrations 1922-32 taught at the Academy of Arts, Tbilisi 1924 published "Leto v Angore" (Summer in Angora) continued to make paintings, drawings, and graphic designs until his death.
