Description
Image of four portraits of American actor Effie Ellsler consisting of a full-length portrait of Ellsler sitting in a throne-like chair with her feet on a pillow playing a mandolin; a full-length portrait of Ellsler in a formal dress standing in a forested area with her hands clasped together; a head-and-shoulders portrait of Ellsler; and a half-length portrait of Ellsler outdoors wearing a coat, hat, and gloves, with birds sitting on tree limbs around her; with a date sheet for an October 24, [1883], performance, presumably of the melodrama Courage by A.C. Gunter at the Fulton Opera House in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
Single-color print. Date supplied by cataloger based on day and month on date sheet; a Lancaster, Pennsylvania, newspaper advertised Ellsler in the play "Courage" at the Fulton Opera House on October 24, 1883 (Lancaster Daily Intelligencer, 23 October 1883, page 3). "Forbes Co. Boston & N.Y."--text, bottom right margin. "J E Baker"--text, artist's signature in stone, bottom left of image. "Opera House. / Wednesday / Oct'r / 24 / One / Night / Only."--text, date sheet pasted at center of poster.
