Photograph caption dated November 14, 1947 reads, "Edward Merrifield, center, school crossing watchman, told the inquest that the automobile was "traveling at a tremendous speed - faster than I ever saw go through the crossing," at Ninth and Valencia streets." Note: Patrick Burns, 7, was killed when struck by an automobile driven by Jack A. Risley, 26, in a crosswalk at Ninth and Valencia streets. Witnesses said the car threw the boy 159 feet. Risley was booked on suspicion of manslaughter.
