Santa Monica Public Library Image Archives. D49 Digital object 1504 img0064 In April 1958, the City of Santa Monica Redevelopment Agency chose a 45-acre beach strip in Ocean Park for redevelopment this area was divided into two parts so the work could be done in two phases. By February 1962, 107 structures had been demolished and bids were opened for the demolition of the remaining 63. The first high-rise apartment buildings were scheduled to be completed in 1965. Pacific Ocean Park (POP) amusement pier opened July 28, 1958 and closed October 6, 1967. The pier was demolished 1974-1975.
