Description
Hand-drawn birds-eye map of San Jose as it looked in 1892, with the light tower and Santa Clara Street inset at the top. Based on a bird's eye map of San Jose published by the San Jose Mercury in 1892. Narration at bottom by Rambo begins, "Above is an artist's 1891 bird's-eye view of San Jose and surrounding countryside, then real country! Remarkable detail is displayed as any of the few remaining 'survivors' will confirm. As far as man-made landmarks are concerned -- few remain -- but the topographical skeleton of streets, waterways and railroads afford visual clues that link the past and present. Jogs in streets are due to folds and tears in original antique map. This map appeared in San Jose Mercury, Jan. 1 1892. The writer added border sketches and text..."
