Description
Photograph of a Douglas DC-2 plane at Los Angeles Harbor ready for shipment to Australia, 1937. An airplane reading, "VH-UYB" on the side can be seen facing right on a large, flat boat. A small ship with masts can be seen at right, while what appears to be a tug-boat can be seen at left reading, "Case Construction Company, Inc.". A building reading "N.Y.K. Line" can be seen behind the ship at right, while another ship can be seen in the left background. Photonegative sleeve reads, "242" and "166". "This DC-2 was imported new for Australian National Airways, Ltd. in 1937, who named it "Pengana". Although it had a mishap in 1939 (it crashed into the Cooks River after overrunning the runway at Mascot Airport in September of 1939), VH-UYB went on to serve faithfully (mainly on the Adelaide - Melbourne route) until it was broken up in January 1948" -- unknow author. http://www.edcoatescollection.com/ac1/austu/VH-UYB.html Compares to CHS-40407 (record ID chs-m10962)
