Description
“The main endemic disease was YAWS, a disease of ulceration, often widespread over the body: it was much worse below 4,500 ft. than higher up. Chogoria is 5,000 ft. altitude.” Portrait of a young woman and child both suffering the symptoms of a bacterial infection. The medical staff at Chogoria were mainly responsible for the eradication of yaws from the district as it was easily treated with a single injection. Dr Irvine wrote on the disease in his thesis for his degree from the University of Aberdeen. ❧ Image from the collection of Dr Archibald Clive Irvine (1893-1974) showing the early years of the Chogoria mission, established near Mt Kenya in 1922 and run by Dr Irvine, ministering to the Chuka and Mwimbi peoples.
