Mary Ellen Hofmann was born in 1843 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania of German American parents (Johann Cristian and Anna Maria (Norick) Hofmann). She came to California in 1876 most likely with her sister Sarah Elizabeth, joining her brother, Joseph A. Hofmann, in San Francisco. She worked as a seamstress prior to attending Hahnemann Medical College of the Pacific. She graduated with a M.D. in homeopathic medicine in 1896 and set up a private practice in San Francisco, remaining there from 1896 to 1906. She moved to Los Angeles, practicing medicine there until her death in 1919.
