Description
The fire-engulfed wood and iron remains of River Lines boats moored along the west banks of the Sacramento River are shown in this Aug. 28, 1932 photo. Priming the conflagration were powerful winds, dry conditions that had lasted for weeks, and a number of exploding fuel tanks. A Southern Pacific Railroad fire train tried to assist, but to little effect. The night watchman for River Lines claimed to have been inspecting the boats no more than 10 minutes before the fire started.
