Description: Marie Donaldson Ames Byrd, wife of Commander Richard E. Byrd is shown with an unidentified members of Byrd's crew aboard the whaling ship C.A. Larsen. Marie had traveled with her husband as far as Los Angeles, but would not be joining him as he departed the Los Angeles Harbor for his first exploration of Antarctica and the South Pole, via New Zealand. This event took place on October 10, 1928.
