Description
"Häuptling Nkulelo (links) und Schangali (rechts stehend) mit ihren Ältesten in Madschame, Deutsch-Ost-Afrika." ("Chief Ngulelo (on the left) and Shangali (standing on the right) with their elders in Machame, German East Africa."). On the left: Nkulelo wrapped in a white shawl. On the right: Shangali wrapped in a red-colored shawl. Behind them: six Africans sitting on the ground. In the background: a hut covered with palm leaves and a pathway leading to the hut.
Postcard published by the Leipzig Mission. -- Shangali was Chief of Machame from 1890 to 1901 upon approval by the Germans. In 1893 he accommodated the first missionaries of the Leipzig Mission. When the Germans discovered a conspiracy, Shangali was deposed, but he was saved from the gallows by Missionary Emil Müller. In 1918 he came to power again. Five years later he resigned in favor of his son. Shangali was baptized two days before he died. His Christian name was Jakobo. -- Ngulelo was Chief of Machame from 1901 to 1916. In 1917 he was deported by the British to Kisimayo (Somaliland), where he converted to Islam. -- The mission station in Machame was founded in 1893.
