Photograph caption dated October 17, 1960 reads, "North Hollywood police Sgt. William L. Gilmer demonstrates way he uses Ionoscope to record gamma rays as he regularly measures radioactivity for civil defense. Weekly checks of device keep it in condition to register radioactive fallout."
