A large group of nuns in religious habit and parishioners cheer as they celebrate Pope John Paul II's visit to Nicaragua at Plaza 19 de Julio in March 1983. Many in the crowd are holding the yellow-and-white flag of the Vatican City and Nicaragua's blue-and-white flag; one person in the middle is holding the red-and-black flag of the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN). To the left of the image in the foreground there is a nun in religious habit holding up a poster of Gaspar García Laviana, a Catholic priest and revolutionary who fought for the liberation of Nicaragua and its people. He was killed in action while fighting against the forces of Nicaraguan dictator Anastasio Somoza Debayle in 1978. The poster reads, "We are loyal to Gaspar's example." Un grupo grande de monjas en hábito religioso y feligreses celebran la visita del papa Juan Pablo II en la Plaza 19 de Julio en marzo de 1983.
